A humanitarian project for a major issue
The humanitarian sector is one of the most often considered by the Applied Foreign Language (LEA) students for their future careers. As part of the Focus-LEA programme, this project allows them to familiarise themselves with NGOs that are working to ensure that human solidarity improves the lives of others worldwide. In line with the dominant sensitivity of students of the LEA department, the Humanistra project focuses its action on women’s education.
A quality partner advocating education
The Strasbourg campus hosts many students from Afghanistan. They tell of a traditional country in which the low status of women hinders the overall development of society.
Considering that girls’ education is a primary factor of economic, cultural, moral and societal development, the Humanistra project works as a partner of the humanitarian association Amitié franco-afghane. AFRANE, the oldest Afghan association in Europe, is recognised for the quality of its actions, such as the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms. It also supports 48 schools in Afghanistan – for nearly 100,000 students – through teacher training and equipment providing.
Humanistra united around ambitious actions
In coordination with Mr. Zaher Divantchegui, regional representative of AFRANE, the students involved pursue two objectives: to improve knowledge and love of Afghanistan and to raise funds to support the education of its youth. Through cultural events ranging from lectures, screenings, music and gastronomy, they are able to put to good use the skills fostered by the program. They actively work to raise awareness among students and staff for the cause of Afghan children by budgeting, organising, and managing a complex project and its communication. It is a great way to achieve the vocation of human openness of the LEA Bachelor around a humanitarian project.
Growing difficulties
According to Le Monde, in 2019, nearly 20% of students were living below the poverty line. However, the cost of student life in France continues to rise and Strasbourg is unfortunately not spared.
A project by and for students
LEA students, themselves aware of and concerned about the precarious student situation, took the initiative to help their peers.
Food expenses weigh heavily on the students’ wallets. Although a good diet is more than necessary as a student, some can no longer afford it. Humanistra’s mission is therefore to help these people, by responding to their needs as best as possible and precisely by distributing essential food, without any proof of precariousness.
