Discovering the translator’s profession

Backed by ITIRI’s three renowned Masters in Translation, the LEA degree in Strasbourg has always encouraged vocations for translators in its curriculum. Even though this professional sector is undergoing major changes, many students still intend to go into translation, whether literary or technical.

Thanks to this project, they put into practice the lessons received in their introductory courses and confront the reality of a terribly demanding job. They see this experience as an entry visa to a world where it is already difficult to get an internship.

In order to be aware of all aspects of the profession, our apprentice translators are also interested in the question of publishing rights and how their work is published. The translations produced are published online and in print for a limited edition.

Three different challenges for demanding translations

For the year 2020, a first group of female students is in charge of the elaboration and translation into various languages of a school and extra-curricular booklet for families of foreign students.

The second group is working on the translation into German of five brochures produced by the Sustainable Development Unit and on the translation into French of some chapters of the book “Paul Glück” by Klaus Kordon.

Fabiana Carrero-Rangel and Analuisa Machadobatista have chosen to translate the eco-guides written by the sustainable development mission of the University of Strasbourg into Spanish. For their part, Marleine Ngo-Babina and Manon Malerba are responsible for the translation into French of a short story entitled Línea 40 by Patricia Esteban Erlés, taken from the anthology Insólitas.

Tutor-assisted translation

The two groups are respectively accompanied by Ms. Breyel-Steiner and Ms. Bellefleur, two professional translators. They can also rely on their faculty tutors, Ms. Baudry and Mr. Sinclair.
